Do Polystyrene Ceilings Still Need Ceiling Insulation?

Polystyrene ceilings provide some thermal resistance, but that does not mean additional ceiling insulation is unnecessary. In many homes, the best overall performance comes from using the polystyrene ceiling as the finished ceiling surface while installing dedicated ceiling insulation in the roof space above it.

The two materials perform different jobs. Polystyrene contributes to thermal resistance and provides the finished ceiling, while a thicker layer of ceiling insulation can significantly improve thermal performance and, depending on the material used, acoustic performance as well.

Do Polystyrene Ceilings Provide Enough Insulation on Their Own?

Polystyrene has natural insulating properties because its structure contains millions of small air-filled cells that slow heat transfer.

A polystyrene ceiling therefore provides more thermal resistance than a ceiling material with little insulating value. However, ceiling panels are relatively thin compared with purpose-made bulk ceiling insulation.

The overall thermal performance of the ceiling also depends on factors such as:

  • Polystyrene thickness
  • Roof construction
  • Size and ventilation of the roof cavity
  • Amount of direct sunlight reaching the roof
  • Existing insulation
  • Gaps and openings in the ceiling
  • Local climate

For this reason, a polystyrene ceiling should not automatically be considered a replacement for dedicated ceiling insulation.

Why Add Ceiling Insulation Above a Polystyrene Ceiling?

The roof of a house can absorb a large amount of heat during the day. This heat builds up inside the roof cavity and can then transfer through the ceiling into the rooms below.

  • Dedicated ceiling insulation creates an additional thermal barrier between the roof space and the living area.
  • During summer, this helps reduce heat entering the home. During winter, it helps reduce heat escaping through the ceiling.

Using insulation above a polystyrene ceiling can therefore improve the thermal performance of the complete roof and ceiling system rather than relying solely on the ceiling panel itself.

What About Sound and Acoustics?

This is another important reason to consider insulation above a polystyrene ceiling. Polystyrene is a lightweight, rigid material and is not particularly effective at absorbing sound. While it can form part of a ceiling system, it does not absorb airborne sound in the same way that soft, fibrous insulation materials do.

Installing glasswool ceiling insulation above the polystyrene ceiling can substantially improve sound absorption within the ceiling and roof cavity. The fibrous structure of glasswool absorbs sound energy rather than allowing it to reflect as easily within the cavity. This can help with noise from sources such as rain on the roof, activity elsewhere in the building and general sound travelling through the ceiling structure.

Glasswool should not be confused with complete soundproofing, as acoustic performance depends on the entire ceiling construction. However, it is far better suited to sound absorption than polystyrene alone. For homes where both thermal insulation and acoustic performance are important, a polystyrene ceiling combined with glasswool insulation above it can be a much more effective system.

Polystyrene Ceilings and Glasswool Perform Different Jobs

The two materials should not necessarily be viewed as alternatives.

A polystyrene ceiling provides the finished visible ceiling while also contributing some thermal resistance.

Glasswool ceiling insulation is installed above the ceiling and provides a much thicker insulating layer while also helping absorb sound within the cavity.

Used together, they can provide:

  • Improved thermal resistance
  • Better temperature control
  • Improved sound absorption
  • A lightweight finished ceiling
  • Better overall roof and ceiling performance

This is why having a polystyrene ceiling does not automatically mean that additional insulation is unnecessary.

Where Is the Ceiling Insulation Installed?

In a typical home, ceiling insulation is installed inside the roof cavity above the ceiling.

Depending on the construction and insulation product, it may be installed between ceiling joists, over the joists or across the ceiling structure.

The insulation should be correctly fitted to minimize unnecessary gaps while taking the roof structure, electrical wiring, downlights and other services into account.

The polystyrene ceiling itself should not simply be expected to carry the weight of insulation unless the ceiling system has specifically been designed for this.

Can You Add Insulation Above an Existing Polystyrene Ceiling?

In many cases, yes.

If there is suitable access to the roof cavity, insulation can often be installed above an existing polystyrene ceiling without removing the ceiling panels.

The condition of the ceiling structure, available roof space, electrical installation and type of insulation should all be considered before installation.

This can make ceiling insulation a practical upgrade for homes that already have polystyrene ceilings installed.

Does Every Polystyrene Ceiling Need Additional Insulation?

Not necessarily.

Some buildings may already have insulation installed elsewhere in the roof system, while others may have been designed to achieve the required thermal performance without an additional layer directly above the ceiling.

The important thing is to consider the complete roof and ceiling system.

If a house has little or no other roof insulation, adding dedicated ceiling insulation above a polystyrene ceiling can provide a significant improvement in thermal performance.

If sound absorption is also important, fibrous products such as glasswool provide an additional benefit that polystyrene ceiling panels cannot provide on their own.

Should You Use Polystyrene Ceilings and Ceiling Insulation Together?

For many homes, the answer is yes.

Polystyrene ceilings already provide some insulating value, but dedicated ceiling insulation can greatly increase the thermal resistance of the roof and ceiling area.

Where acoustic performance is a concern, glasswool ceiling insulation is particularly useful because it provides both thermal insulation and sound absorption.

Rather than expecting one material to perform every function, using the two together allows the polystyrene ceiling to provide the finished ceiling surface while the insulation above it handles much of the thermal and acoustic work.

The result is a more complete ceiling system with better overall performance.
